Identity Crisis

My daughter has a "Cultural Heritage" project coming up at the end of February. She will have to set up a table and give a 10 minute presentation about the country her family is "from" (which can't be America) several times for a cultural fair that will be happening at her school. Groups will stop at each table and listen to the presentation then they will end the day by sharing food from each person's country. They have to do things like counting in the language of that country, singing a children's song from there, wearing traditional dress... Now, we are lucky in my estimation because we don't have to look back to a great great anyone... My husband himself can tell my DD about Egypt... I was all psyched because it is a fun chance for her to be proud of coming from such an interesting background... And she has even been there! But DH is boycotting the project. What's up with that????

Interesting. We are going to participate in a homeschooling "world fair." Lemmie tell you, when I told the co-ordinater that my son had decided to represent the um Vikings..she did not hide her surprise that the Moslem family would not be representing a Moslem country. Personally, I was very, very relieved as "representing" the Muslim peoples can be very stressful for me. Perhaps your hubby is feeling similarly?
What's your cultural heritage Momma? As a Muslim you may downplay your heritage, as I do and the kids might get a kick out of learning more about their Mom's side.
My son recently used the word "kafir" and we had a lovely (seriously) discussion about when Mama was a kafir and why we can't judge people because we don't know whose hearts Allah has veiled and yadda, yadda, ya...What is your heritage? I wanna KNOW!
Love and Peace,

Well Brooke... My Maternal Grandfather was German that is my only heritage that I know. Everyone else traces back to like before the revolutionary war and therefore is so mixed up by now it no longer matters!LOL

Why's he boycotting? She can wear a galabaya and serve cosharee or something.

Mona, I don't know what his problem with it is to be honest. He is strange sometimes. Maybe he is tired of being a novelty here in this town, I don't know really. Not to mention that he want's to emphasis that Egypt is not the guy on the camel by the pyramids that they always show in movies. I think I am just going ahead with it anyway.

How about you do both? Side by side German pastries and Egyptian pastries...or foods made with the same ingredients but in the two ethnicities..and similar stuffs...like jelbabs and clogs!

It's a good idea anon... But I talked to the teacher and she is kinda expecting us to choose only one country so each child's table will be all about that country!

he's boycotting???

I think my husband would dress our (future) children in the egyptian flag everyday if possible.

I think it sounds AWESOME and I hope you bypassed your husband and still did it.
